Along time ago, there lived a man and his wife. They longed for a child, but the years passed and still they had none.
From their house they could see a beautiful garden full of flowers and vegetables, surrounded by a high wall. No one dared to go there for it belonged to a witch who was feared by everybody.
One day, as the woman was looking out of her window, she saw a bed of the most delicious looking radishes.
Oh! How she longed to eat them! As the days passed, her yearning grew (for, of course, the radishes were, in fact, enchanted!) Full of concern, her husband asked her why she was so distressed and she replied, "I fear that I shall die if I do not eat some of those radishes!"
